What About GLP-1 Shots and Meds?

What About GLP-1 Shots and Meds?

A bridge gets you across the river. It isn't where you build the house. Keep that picture in mind, because it explains one of the biggest Medicare changes this year.

GLP-1 medications, the weekly shots and the newer daily pills you've probably heard about, come up in almost every conversation I have this season. Here's where Medicare stands right now, in plain English.

1. Drug plans have covered them for some conditions for a while

Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) can cover certain GLP-1 medications when your doctor prescribes them for conditions like type 2 diabetes or to lower heart risk. Whether a specific medication is covered depends on your plan's drug list.

2. Weight loss alone is a different story

Federal law keeps Part D plans from covering medications prescribed only for weight loss. For years, that meant people with Medicare who wanted one of these medications for weight loss paid the full price themselves.

3. That's where the bridge comes in

On July 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) started the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. It's a temporary program that covers certain GLP-1 medications for weight management for people who meet its health criteria, and it runs through December 31, 2027.

It works outside your drug plan. Your doctor requests approval through Medicare, and you must be enrolled in Medicare drug coverage, either a stand-alone Part D plan or certain Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage. It doesn't cover every GLP-1 medication, and if you already get one through your plan for another condition, that stays with your plan.

Because it's a bridge and not a house, no one can say yet what comes after 2027.

4. Annual Enrollment matters here

Annual Enrollment runs through December 7. If you take a GLP-1 now, or you and your doctor are talking about one, check two things for 2027: that your coverage includes drug coverage, and that your medications are on your plan's drug list. Your Annual Notice of Change letter shows what's different next year.

5. The medical decision stays with your doctor

Whether one of these medications fits you is a conversation between you and your prescriber. A few good questions to bring along: Would this be covered through my plan or through the Bridge? What side effects should I watch for? How do I keep my strength while I'm on it? Never start, stop, or change a medication without talking with them first.

How to Find a Cause That Needs Your Help

How to Find a Cause That Needs Your Help

Years ago, when I worked in radio, a group of students from the Iowa Department for the Blind spent time with me at the station as part of a summer program. I was supposed to be the one teaching. I learned far more from them than they ever learned from me.

That's the funny thing about giving your time. You walk in thinking you're the help, and you walk out with more than you brought. If you've retired, or you're cutting back, and you've wondered where you could be useful, here's a simple way to find your fit.

  1. Start with what pulls at you. Kids learning to read, animals waiting for a home, a church or community group, local history, the outdoors. The cause you care about is the one you'll keep showing up for.
  2. Count what you bring. Decades of work and life gave you skills somebody needs: bookkeeping, fixing things, teaching, listening, staying calm when others don't. A small business owner needs a mentor. A food pantry needs someone who can organize a storeroom.
  3. Be honest about your time and energy. Two hours a week counts. So does one Saturday a month. Plenty of roles happen sitting down, from answering phones to reading with a child.
  4. Know where to look. Your church, library, local schools, animal shelter, and hospital volunteer office are good places to start. AmeriCorps Seniors connects people 55 and older with local service programs, and VolunteerMatch.org lets you search opportunities by ZIP code. If you ran a business, SCORE matches experienced volunteers with new business owners who need a mentor.
  5. Try it before you commit. Ask to sit in on one shift. If it fits, great. If not, there's no shame in trying somewhere else. Some roles, especially ones with children, ask for a background check. That's normal and a good sign.

A few weeks ago we talked about jobs you can do after 65. Volunteering is the other side of that same coin: staying useful, staying connected, and staying in the game on your own terms.

If you'd like to talk through how this stage of life fits with your coverage, book a Discovery Session or call (713) 588-5498.

If you had two free hours next week, what cause would you give them to?

How to Get a Pharmacist to Review Your Medications

How to Get a Pharmacist to Review Your Medications

Last time, we talked about building your own medication list. Here's what to do with it: ask a pharmacist to review it.

Many people don't know this, but Medicare drug plans, including Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, must offer a program called Medication Therapy Management to members who meet certain requirements. Taking medications for more than one chronic condition is a common starting point, though each plan sets its own criteria within federal limits.

If you qualify, you're invited to a comprehensive medication review. It's a one-on-one conversation with a pharmacist or other qualified health professional about everything you take: prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and supplements. Afterward, you should receive a written summary with a medication list and a to-do list to share with your doctors. If you qualify, there's no additional charge, and you can say no.

How to ask for one:

  1. Call the member services number on your plan ID card and ask: "Am I eligible for Medication Therapy Management, and can I schedule a comprehensive medication review?" Many plans mail an invitation first, so look through your mail too.
  1. If you don't qualify, ask your regular pharmacist whether they offer a medication review. Services and any cost vary by pharmacy, so ask before you book.
  1. Bring your list to your Annual Wellness Visit and ask your provider to go through it with you.

Two cautions. Never stop or change a medication on your own. Changes are made with your prescriber. And be careful with unexpected calls offering a medication review. If you're unsure who is calling, hang up and dial the number on your member ID card.

One Plug-In, Two Ways to Connect: Plugin Business Expands to Senior Living

One Plug-In, Two Ways to Connect: Plugin Business Expands to Senior Living

The same steady Medicare resource, now serving senior living communities alongside the employers we already help.

Plugin Business began as a way for Clear Path Senior Benefits to help employers support their Medicare-eligible staff. That work continues. But the idea at the heart of it, being the calm, independent resource when Medicare gets complicated, turns out to matter just as much in another place: the senior living communities where so many older adults now call home. So we're expanding what Plugin Business does.

Why now

This year is bringing the largest Medicare Advantage shake-up in years. Across the country, a number of insurers are leaving the Medicare Advantage market for 2027, and some plans are ending or narrowing their networks. For an individual, that means a decision to make. For a senior living community full of residents, it can mean a wave of notices, questions, and confusion that lands all at once, often on staff who already have more than enough to do.

That's exactly the kind of moment Plugin Business was built for.

What we do

Plugin Business is a productized service. We assemble a curated set of vetted solutions and plug them into your organization, built around what your people actually need. It now comes in two forms.

For senior living communities. We become the Medicare resource for your residents and their families. We help them understand the 2027 changes and review their options, at no additional charge for our time and guidance, including the dual-eligible and prescription-drug situations that many agents overlook. Everything is voluntary: residents and families always choose for themselves, we are a recommended resource and never a requirement, and your team stays out of residents' personal coverage decisions. Over time, the Plugin Business Toolkit brings vetted, co-brandable resident benefits, from dental, vision, and hearing to safety and protection services, that help your community stand out and keep the people who make it thrive.

For employers and HR. We help your Medicare-eligible employees understand how their options fit alongside your group plan, so experience stays on your payroll instead of walking out the door. You get the benefit of keeping seasoned staff without your HR team having to become Medicare experts, and the Plugin Business Toolkit brings resident-style benefits and resources tuned for a workplace.

The same principle, two doors

Whether it's a community or a company, the pattern is the same: local, independent guidance from someone who sits on your people's side of the table, backed by a national network. Local guidance, national backing. That's the whole idea.

Let's talk

If you run a senior living community or a business with Medicare-eligible staff, the 2027 changes are already in motion, and your people shouldn't have to sort them out alone. A short, no-obligation conversation is the best place to start.

Do you work for these companies because they sponsor your events?

Do you work for these companies because they sponsor your events?

It's a fair question, and the honest answer takes a minute. It's worth knowing, especially now, when the phone starts ringing for Annual Enrollment.

There are two main types of Medicare agents, and the difference matters to you.

Captive agents work for one insurance company or a small group of related companies, either as employees or under contract, and they sell only that company's plans. Many do good work for their clients. The trade-off for you is simple: they can only offer what that one company sells.

Independent broker agents, like me and the agents I work alongside, are not employees of any insurance company. We hold contracts with several carriers, so we can look at more than one option for you. When someone enrolls through us, the carrier pays us a commission, at no additional charge to you. You don't pay us, and you deserve to know how we're paid.

Do carriers sponsor events we attend and provide training and tools? Yes, because they want agents to represent them. That doesn't mean a carrier picks your plan. Our job is to recommend options that may suit your needs, and the decision is yours.

One caution: we represent several carriers, not every carrier, and most agents don't offer every plan in an area. Ask any agent three questions: Who pays you? Which carriers do you represent? Do you offer every plan available to me?

And if you didn't ask for a call and don't know who's on the line, you don't owe them a conversation.

At Clear Path Senior Benefits, we explain all of this up front so you can decide with confidence. If you'd like to talk it through, book a Discovery Session at https://clearpathsb.com/discover/ or call (713) 588-5498.
