How Can I Use a Computer If I Can’t See or Hear as Well as I Used To?

The "A" in H.U.W.A. stands for Adaptability. As we age, two things tend to happen: parts of our body don't work quite like they used to, and new technology comes along that we can choose to adapt to. Both are true when it comes to seeing and hearing, and technology has become a genuine ally here, quiet enough to fit into daily life without changing how you look or feel, until you realize no one else cares about your methods, only that you're still out there participating in the world.

Start with the device already in your pocket. Both iPhones and Android phones have built-in accessibility settings: larger text, higher contrast, hearing aid pairing, live captioning, and touch adjustments for tremors or neuropathy. Many phones will also read screens and messages aloud. If you want more, a magnifier app helps with menus or distant signs, and live transcription apps and services are improving quickly, some can even turn sign language into spoken word through your camera. Most of this is free or low cost.

Your computer offers similar built-in tools. Windows has Narrator, and Mac has VoiceOver, both free, both already installed, both worth trying first. If you want more power on Windows, NVDA is a free, widely trusted screen reader used by many in the low-vision community. Simpler reading tools like Zabaware can read documents and web pages aloud without the full learning curve of a screen reader, useful if you mainly need text read to you rather than full navigation help. Voice options keep improving too, some genuinely sound human now, and some don't, which is its own kind of entertainment.

AI is starting to change this space further. Devices like Meta's smart glasses can describe what's in front of you, read text aloud, and connect you to a live human volunteer for help, real capability, still early, already useful for people with low vision or blindness.

Every H.U.W.A. principle matters to me, but Adaptability is personal. I've had low vision since birth, and I use screen readers and magnifiers myself, most days. I don't have this figured out perfectly, I've just learned to work with the world on my terms, and from people who do it better than I do. Let's figure out what works for you, together
